![]() May is Celiac Awareness Month and Celiac Disease is an issue close to our hearts here at South Main Street Barbeque. As some of you may know the owner's family is strictly Gluten-free. Eating Gluten-free has come a long way in the last few years, as more and more people are diagnosed with the disease. The food industry has begun to make strides in what was once considered a "tasteless" world of GF options. However, even in the midst of the changing tide, the dining options available for those with Celiac's when eating out are sparse. South Main Street BBQ aims to change that by offering not only GF options on our menu but delicious ones at that! According to cureceliacdisease.org from the University of Chicago's Celiac Disease Center, Celiac's affects 1% of healthy Americans. This figure means that at least 3 million Americans (1 in 133) are living with Celiac Disease, of that number 97% of them are living day-to-day undiagnosed. Well, what is Celiac's you may ask... Celiac Disease is an inherited autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive process of the small intestine. When a person who has the disease consumes gluten, a protein readily found in wheat, rye and barley, their immune system responds by attacking the small intestine and inhibiting the absorption of important nutrients into the body -- in essence, blocking them. If left undiagnosed and untreated, Celiac Disease can lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders, as well as osteoporosis, infertility, neurological conditions and in rare cases, cancer. It is imperative that those with Celiac avoid products that contain Gluten. You can view and print a list of foods those diagnosed with the disease should avoid. Here at South Main Street Barbeque, all our meats, sauces and most of our sides are Gluten-free and Celiac-safe. We also offer Udi GF buns for a delicious, worry-free sandwich you can really sink your teeth into! Visit us to not only enjoy some of the best BBQ in the South but the peace of mind of knowing that you can also enjoy a safe and affordable meal as well! Visit us today at 116 East South Main Street in beautiful historic downtown Waxhaw, NC. You can also order online.

I appreciate your cause for offering good gluten-free and celiac-safe meals. Most people are not aware of the Celiac disease. I'm very happy that the food industry is offering more options for those who are suffering with Celiac's. It's pretty hard to avoid all products that contain gluten. Especially when it comes to pastas and breads, and any ingredients that contain rye, wheat, and barley. Kudos to South Main Street Barbeque for providing healthy, delicious, gluten-free, and celiac-safe meals. You deserve a much needed praise.
